Heating in the nursery

Heating in the nursery

Nursery – a room for the year-round keeping of animals – equipped with sewerage, ventilation, and water supply. Be sure to provide heating in the nursery. Its task is to maintain a positive air temperature in the room during the cold season. This is necessary for the well-being of animals, and the creation of favorable working conditions for workers.
The heating system of the nursery prevents freezing of the room and protects it from the formation of condensate and ice. The question of whether the heating is necessary for the nursery is not even a question for specialists: if it is planned to keep animals in the cold season, heating is a mandatory requirement. When designing heating for a nursery, the same standards apply as when laying veterinary facilities.

Nursery heating norms

The norms of heating in the nursery are given in the NTP APK – 02. The following conditions are created in it:

  • In the cold season, the temperature in the room for keeping cats and dogs should not be lower than 16ºS, if the nursery contains small animals (hamsters, mice) – not lower than 20ºS.
  • Animals should not have access to the kennel’s heating system: it must be fenced off, but at the same time, workers should have free access for disinfection and cleaning.

Heating in the nursery: modern systems

When choosing to heat a nursery, the number of animals that will be kept in it, the area of the room, its geometry, the presence of windows, and their location are taken into account. If the nursery is part of a veterinary complex, it is connected to a common boiler room. The air is heated by a coolant circulating through a system of pipes and radiators. The efficiency of heating depends on the location and area of the radiators, and their heat transfer coefficient. Water heating is a simple solution, but it is not without its drawbacks.

  • It is impossible to create autonomous heating for a nursery – the temperature in the room will be the same as in the rest of the building.
  • Heating the coolant requires the consumption of resources (gas or electricity – depending on the type of boiler), and the cost of maintaining the facility in the cold season increases.

For autonomous heating of the nursery, electrical equipment is used – for example, electric heaters. They are located anywhere, if necessary, moved to create a natural circulation of warm air masses and uniform heating of the room. But electrical equipment creates a high load on the power grid, which, combined with the high cost of electricity, makes the solution unpopular. In addition, veterinarians do not recommend using electric heaters in the immediate vicinity of cabins with dogs – they are dangerous for animals.

Solar energy for nursery heating

Solar energy for nursery heating

Thinking about whether nursery heating is necessary and how to organize it in compliance with norms and minimal costs, engineers in America and Europe often opt for solar-powered equipment. Today, this solution is becoming popular in Russia and the CIS. The use of heating devices that use solar energy creates heating without being tied to external energy sources. It is possible to create autonomous heating of the nursery without increasing electricity consumption. It is energy efficient and economically feasible:

  • there is no need to connect the nursery to centralized heating: the design of the room is simplified;
  • the system does not depend on the operation of the power grid or fuel supplies: even in the event of power outages, the animals are kept in comfortable conditions for them.

Heating in nurseries with the help of solar equipment is built as follows: the device heats the air and pumps warm air masses into the room. Due to their circulation in the rooms, the desired temperature is quickly set, humidity is regulated, condensation is eliminated, and optimal conditions for keeping animals are created.
